Minnesota GOP $2 million in debt, ending embarrassing year for state Republicans

MPR News has published a GOP memo detailing $2 million in debt, including previously unreported $415k in payables, a "campaign finance violation" according to MPR's Tom Scheck.

Read the entire memo here.

In addition, MPR News has also detailed some funds which are being questioned by the Minnesota GOP, including contributions by convicted Ponzi schemer Tom Petters. Again, according to MPR's Tom Scheck, lawyers believe the GOP to be on the "financial hook" to pay these debts.

Read that story here.

In just over the course of the last month, the self-proclaimed "party of family values and fiscal responsibility" have had leadership failings in both areas. First, a co-sponsor of legislation that will put an amendment in the state constitution that bans gay marriage on the 2012 ballot, Amy Koch, stepped down from her post as Senate Majority Leader because of an inappropriate relationship with a Senate Staffer. And now, the party reveals that it is a whopping $2 million in debt.

Add these gaffes to an embarrassing state shutdown when state Republicans refused to raise taxes on the wealthiest 1% of Minnesotans, opting instead to shift the burden to our children, disabled and the elderly, and you've got the Year in Republican Leadership in a nutshell.

Let's commit to working hard in 2012 to end the moral and fiscal hypocrisy in our state.
